Celebrate Mother’s Day at London’s top restaurants

It’s almost 31st March – a day that has some of the country’s top restaurants prepare special set menus for none other than our mothers.

In Islam, the status of the mother in the family unit is second to none. Why not show her your love and appreciation this Mother’s Day by treating her this coming Saturday to a fantastic meal at one of the following swanky restaurants in London.

CINNAMON BAZAAR

Cinnamon Bazaar Vivek Singh Mother's Day 2018

Chef Vivek Singh of Cinnamon Bazaar in Covent Garden has created a 6-dish sharing menu for £29pp (min 2 people):

  • Indo-Chinese chicken wings, garlic and soy sauce
  • Watermelon Chaat: Pressed watermelon, amaranth seeds, date chutney, masala cashew nut (v)(n)
  • Pepper Fry: Curry leaf and cracked black pepper fried shrimp
  • Lamb Roganjosh Shepherd’s Pie (voted Time Out – the 100 best dishes in London)
  • Malabar boatman’s cobia fishcurry (gf)
  • House black dal andnaan bread
  • Nutmeg crème brûlée, carom seed shortbread

NOTE: Halal lamb and chicken that’s prepped and cooked separately. The dessert contains nutmeg. No alcohol used in any of their dishes, but available on the premises.

FtLion Awards 2017’s Best Restaurant of the Year, Grand Trunk Road (review here) is putting up the following Mother’s Day set menu for £38.50 per person (inc VAT):

  • Appetizer
    • Pan seared potato cakes with fresh ginger, green chilli, cottage cheese, mint & tamarind chutney.
    • Tandoor grilled chicken thigh with greenmango & dry fenugreek.
    • Tilapia fish with red, green & yellow pepper, and sweet & spicy marinade.
  • Main Course
    • Chicken thighs, crushed coriander, tamarind, finished with coconut milk.
    • Masala grill sea baas with spicy mash & mustard sauce.
    • Mushrooms with green onion, ginger & creamed spinach.
    • New potatoes cooked with cumin & fresh coriander.
    • Black Lentils cooked overnight, ginger, tomato and dry fenugreek – a speciality of North-West Frontier.
    • Pulao Rice & Bread basket.
  • Dessert

    • Paneer tikka with Andhra pickling spices, mint chutney filling.
    • Grilled sea bream, browned garlic, sundried tomato.

    • Chicken breast simmered with roasted spices, curry leaf and coconut.
    • Braised Somerset lamb with turnips, Kashmiri chillies and spring onions.

    • Broccoli and cauliflower, onion, peppers, ground spices.
    • Yellow lentils tempered with cumin, garlic and coriander.

Tamarind of Mayfair Mother's Day 2018

One of the first Indian restaurants in the world to be awarded a Michelin star, Tamarind of Mayfair is offering a 3-course Mother’s Day Lunch Menu (below) for £40 per person:

  • Spiced bean sprouts with yoghurt, pomegranate, mint & tamarind chutney
  • Devonshire crab & kingfish cake with ginger, mustard and lime leaves; berry chutney
  • Corn-fed chicken supreme, tandoor-grilled with puréed peppers & cardamom
  • Chicken simmered with garlic, cumin, tomato and baby spinach leaves
  • Kid goat braised with browned onion, Kashmiri chillies and cinnamon
    Served with:

    • Trio of beans tossed with shallots, fennel seeds and coriander
    • Yellow lentils flavoured with ginger, turmeric and chilli
    • Braised rice with browned onions and saffron
    • Butter Naan
  • Heritage carrot and ginger steamed pudding; classic vanilla ice cream

There’s also a veggie option for £35.

NOTE: Tamarind offers Halal chicken and lamb as default. For this menu, however, the goat, we’ve been informed, is also Halal. All meats are prepped and cooked separately, although there’s no pork on the menu. Alcohol is served on the premises.

Describing itself a “sister-restaurant to Michelin-starred Tamarind of Mayfair”, Zaika of Kensington holds two AA rosettes, and has created a 3-course menu (including a veggie version) for £40pp, featuring the following sumptuous Awadhi cuisine:

  • Mixed Vegetable Tikki – Potato and mixed vegetable galettes. served with mint chutney
  • Murg Malai Tikka – Tandoori grilled chicken supreme, marinated with cheese and cream
    • (Veggie) Paneer Tikka – Marinated and chargrilled paneer, flavoured with tikka spices
  • Achari Seabass – Tandoori grilled seabass marinated with pickling spices
    • (Veggie) Hariyali Broccoli – Tandoori broccoli marinated in fresh mint and coriander
  • Malabar Prawn Curry – Prawn cooked in coconut sauce flavoured with fenugreek seed
