Celebrate Mother’s Day 2022 at London’s top restaurants

This weekend marks that special day when you have the opportunity of treating that one person who’s had the biggest hand in shaping who you are in life: dearest mother.

We’ve compiled a list of set menus presented by some of London’s top Halal-oriented restaurants to help you celebrate this year’s Mother’s Day on Sunday 27 March.

One of FtLion’s favourite chefs, Dayashankar Sharma – the man behind 5/5 rated Heritage and before that Grand Trunk Road – has created the following menu for £48 per person (there’s also a veggie version too):

  • Starters
    • Lotus Root & Sweet Corn Tikki – Pattice, lotus chips, chutneys.
    • Hara Chutney Tikka – Tandoor grilled bonesless chicken thigh, timur, green chilli.
    • Kerelan Prawn – Seafood porial, roasted whole spices, green chilli, rice flour.
  • Mains
    • Makhmali Murgh – Oven roasted malai chicken, tomato, spiced buttery sauce.
    • Dakshini Murgh – Pan-seared sea bream, black pepper, roasted coconut, tomato.
      Served with: Broccoli and chick peas, dal makhani, jeera pulao, butter naan & paratha.
  • Dessert
    • Mixed Berries & Thandai Rice Pudding.

GRAND TRUNK ROAD

We start with #FtLionAwards Best Restaurant of the Year in 2017 and which achieved a perfect 5/5 rating, Grand Trunk Road (review here), who are offering this 3-course set meal (vegetarian option also available), for £42.50 per person (inc VAT):

  • Appetizer
    • Spicy chickpeas salad with sweet yoghurt, mint & tamarind chutney .
    • Tandoor grilled chicken supreme marinated with kaffir lime leaves, cream cheese, coriander & green chillies.
    • Tilapia fish fillet marinated with paprika, carom seeds and dusted with gram floor and golden fried.
  • Main Course
    • Chicken thighs boneless simmered in brown onion, garlic and yoghurt gravy, perfumed with saffron & rose water.
    • Masala grilled sea baas fish with spicy mash & mildly flavoured with kasundi mustard sauce.
    • Indian cottage cheese cooked with creamed spinach, roasted black garlic and cumin seeds.
    • Three yellow lentils tempered with cumin, mustard seeds & curry leaves.
    • Saffron flavoured basmati pulao rice & freshly baked Peshawari & butter naan.
  • Dessert

Kanishka Indian Halal restaurant Mayfair, London chef Atul Kochhar

Double Michelin Chef Atul Kochhar’s Kanishka in Mayfair, which we rated a very impressive 4.5/5, is serving 3-courses for £45 per person with the adage: “To the world you are a mother, but to your family you are the world”:

  • Starter:
    • Guinea fowl tikka with jalpai jola asaa (game meat non-Halal).
    • Baked sea bass with fermented fish & fennel chutney.
    • Spiced tofu stuffed bottle gourd, celeriac and black truffle.
    • Atul’s award-winning chicken tikka pie with cumin scented berry compote.
  • Mains:
    • Pan-seared halibut, aubergine, coconut malai curry.
    • Grilled corn-fed chicken supreme, wild mushrooms, magaj korma.
    • Roasted cauliflower, parsnip, fermented soya bean sauce.
    • Tandoori paneer, purple sprouted broccoli, black sesame sauce.
    • West country lamb loin with hot spices and yoghurt gravy, yellow peas ghugni.

    • Dark Chocolate Sphere – Orange chocolate cream, candied orange, chocolate walnut crumble, spiced caramel sauce.

Michelin-starred Rohit Ghai’s Indian fine-dining restaurant Kutir in Chelsea is offering its 4-course Signature Mother’s Day menu for £55 per person:

  • Course 1:
    • Prawns – Masala: Pink prawns, coconut, sesame, peanut.
  • Course 2:
    • Salmon – Mooli: Tandoori tikka, raita, pickle.
  • Course 3:
    • Chicken Tikka – Masala Fenugreek, tomato, Kashmiri chilli, served with Kaali Dal, Steamed Rice & Bread.
  • Course 4:

Kahani Indian restaurant Chelsea London Michelin star Chef Peter Joseph

Fine-dining restaurant Kahani (see our review) was FtLion’s ‘Best Restaurant of the Year‘ 2018. Chef Peter Joseph has a 3-course menu for £50pp:

  • Starters
    • Sabudana wada with cashew nuts, ginger and chilly; berry chutney.
    • Chicken Tikka with ginger, cream cheese, coriander stem.
    • Grilled seabass, browned garlic, sundried tomato; mustard & fennel salad.
    • Papdi Rajma Chaat, spiced kidney bean with wheat crisps, yogurt, chutneys.
  • Mains
    • Chicken simmered with garlic, roasted spices, finished with puréed spinach.

Chef Atul again, this time at his hugely impressive Mathura in the Westminster listed fire station building, which we reviewed and rated 4.5/5. Here too it’s 3-courses for £45 per person:

  • Starters
    • Goose Tikka with Apple and Raisins Chutney (non-Halal).
    • Sea Bass, Gooseberry, White Mustard Relish Spiced paneer stuffed morels, portobello and black truffle.
    • Lotus Stem, Walnut & Okra Chaat.
    • Atul’s Chicken Tikka Pie, Cranberry and Raw Mango Chutney.
  • Mains
    • Cumin-chilli Monk Fish, Banana Stem, Coconut Malai Curry.
    • Grilled Corn-fed Chicken Supreme, Wild Mushrooms, Musallam Gravy.
    • Roasted Cauliflower, Aloo Bhajia, Fermented Soya Bean Sauce.
    • Baked bottle gourd, shitake, fermented soya bean yakhni.
    • West Country Lamb Loin with Hot Spices and Yoghurt Gravy, Sweet Potato.
    • Served with Saffron Rice, Mathura’s Signature Dal Bukhara and Vegetable Stuffed Kulcha.
  • Dessert

Michelin-star Trishna are putting up not one but two set menu: 4-courses for £45.00, and 5-courses for £50.00:

  • Course 1:
    • Dahi Batata Puri on Bhel – Beet yogurt, tamarind chutney, bhelpuri.
  • Course 2:
    • Coconut & Corn Tikki – Sweetcorn, curry leaves, mint & mango murabba, baby corn bhaji.
    • Shahi Salmon Tikka – Royal cumin, dill leaves, smoked raw papaya & samphire chaat.
  • Course 3:
    • Badami Broccoli – Cardamom, almond, gajar murabba, broccoli & garlic chutney.
    • Duck Cutney Seekh – Tomato tokku, Kashmiri chilli, shallots, pineapple chutney (non-Halal).
  • Course 4:
    • Hyderabadi Subz Kofta – Saffron, cashew nuts, almond, cardamom, paneer.
    • Cashew & Pepper Chicken – Roasted coconut & cashew, telicherry peppercorns.
    • Gongura Lamb – Welsh lamb, pickled sorrel leaves, poppy seeds, Guntur teja chilli.
    • Wild Mushroom Pilau – Oyster, shiitake, shimeji, truffle oil, pink peppercorn raita.
    • Served with makai saag, dal panchmel, basmati rice, bread basket.
  • Course 5:
    • Indian Mango & Cardamom Kheer – Smoked mango jelly, coconut chikki, cardamom kulfi.
    • Tandoori Pineapple & Coconut – Smoked pineapple, coconut malai, tender coconut & jaggery sorbet.
    • Bramley Apple & Pistachio Kulfi – Apple crumble, tukmaria seeds, murabba.
