Bothwell St in the heart of Glasgow city centre

We wrap up our Halal restaurant tour of Scotland’s two grand cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow with a visit to this luxury eatery located in the latter.

Gost is a steakhouse that has acquired a solid all-round reputation since launching in 2022, particulary with its specially curated Halal menu.

With all dishes therein cooked and prepped separately, including strict procedures implemented within the kitchen, so as to avoid any cross-contamination, they offer an impressive range of Halal cuts of meat.

With a Fillet (200g), Ribeye (300g), and Sirloin (300g) ready to order, the following cuts are also available through pre-order: Chateaubrand (500g), Cote De Boeuf (450g), and a T-bone (450g).

Luxury steakhouse Gost offers a dedicated Halal menu…

Gost Halal Glasgow Steakhouse Scotland Fine DiningWhat’s more, not only do all their steaks undergo an inhouse dry-aging process in their fridge, but all Halal cuts are specifically stored separately at the top so as to maintain zero cross-contamination.

Given that Gost ensures that their “beef comes from grass-fed former dairy cattle that have been retired onto grass pastures for a minimum of 12 months, leading to a depth of flavor that is unrivaled”, we’re talking serious quality steaks.

Situated on Bothwell Street in the prime location of Glasgow city centre, this restaurant is stunningly decked out, with plenty of seating, including a large, private room at the back of the premises.

DRINKS

(Left-right) Long Sunset £7.00, Strawberry Spritz, The Pomona – £7.50 each

They may only have a trio of mocktails for us teetotalers, but what they do offer, which includes one we could have had a jug of, have been wonderfully conceived by the mixologist.

What an absolute humdinger The Pomana was!

The Pomona, with Feragaia, passionfruit, pineapple and vanilla, is arguably one of the best mocktails we’ve ever had (and we’ve had quite a few in our time).

This epitomised the meaning of the word smooth, and comprised of a sophisticated flavour profile that had a light sherbet-like sweetness to it, with the vanilla filtering through towards the end.

As for the Feragaia, then this is “Scotland’s first distilled alcohol-free spirit” that brings together “14 responsibly sourced botanicals to create a complex and uncompromising alcohol alternative”.

It was this ingredient of “delicate flavours of flowers and leaves… with the earthier notes of root botanicals and spices” that also undergirded the candy-like zestiness of the Strawberry Spritz.

As for the Long Sunset, with orange, cranberry, passionfruit, and soda; then this was a citrusy affair, but one that was always up against it when up against the previous two.

STARTERS

Pan Seared Scottish King Scallops – Vegan nduja powder, hollandaise, £23.00

RECOMMENDED

Phenomenal scallops! These were as tender as they could ever be, with the mellow sweetness of the hollandaise sauce only helping to enhance the experience.

Charcoal Grilled Octopus – Green apple & olive puree, vegan nduja granola, herbs, £17.00

RECOMMENDED

It may not be the prettiest plate of food, but boy did the combination of these exquisitely charcoal-grilled, tender octopus work well.

Combined with the gentle tanginess of the green apple and olive puree, and a touch of spice running through the background courtesy of the nduja granola, and this was another stonking seafood dish.

Tuna Ceviche – Sashimi-grade tuna, lightly cured in lime and jalapeno, pickled onion, coriander, £17.00

RECOMMENDED

Simply put, you will not get a more delicately refined Tuna Ceviche than this. The secret here is to let the fish rest in the liquid until it begins to take on a brown tinge.

Then enjoy the touch of heat that’s there thanks to the jalapeno and lime mixture it’s cured in.

STEAKS

With all their grilled meats coming with a choice of sides and a sauce, Gost state: “Premium cuts from our dry-aging fridge. We source some of the best cuts from scotland and from afar and finish them in our in-house dry aging fridge.”

Their dedicated Halal menu offers: Fillet (200g) £45 • Ribeye (300g) £44 • Sirloin (300g) £39, as well as the following pre-order steaks: Chateaubrand (500g) £95 • Cote De Boeuf (450g) £57 • T-bone (450g) £56.

Cote De Bouef (450g), £57

PRE-ORDER RECOMMENDED

Given that a 450g Cote de Boeuf was in stock on the day, we felt compelled to give this fatty-cum-meaty cut of utter deliciousness a good go.

Perfectly pink and tender this

Coming in medium rare, the thick griddle marks coupled with the glistening juices on top were enough to get our own juices flowing.

With the following four sauces being Halal – Black Truffle and Chive Butter • Garlic and Herb Butter • Peppercorn Sauce • Blue Cheese Sauce – we had to pair this with the first one.

Given the volume of meat here, the headiness of the black truffle was a master stroke, serving perfectly as a palate cleanser of sorts.

We opted for the Mac and Cheese as a side, which, with its strong cheesy taste, was another superb foil.

Fillet (200g), £45

RECOMMENDED

Even better, however, was this 200g fillet which, having been cooked to a perfect medium rare, was again immaculately executed and presented.

Gost Halal Glasgow Steakhouse Scotland Fine DiningWith a good twist of coarse sea salt, we took our sweet time savouring the smoky goodness and umami meatiness of this utterly moist cut of Scottish beef.

This time we paired this with the Blue Cheese Sauce, whose mellow piquancy served as the perfect contrast.

Add to that a portion of their dangerously addictive Skinny Fries, whose delicately crispy exterior and uber fluffy interior could only be explained, we suspect, by them being double cooked, and you simply couldn’t get any better.

MAINS

Gost Halal Glasgow Steakhouse Scotland Fine Dining

Pan Roasted Fillet of Cod – White crab veloute, sea vegetables, £26.00

RECOMMENDED

And if you thought it was all about their steaks, then think again, because, carrying on from the previous seafood dishes, this Pan Roasted Fillet of Cod would make you think that Gost is just as much a seafood restaurant as it is a steakhouse.

With the fish being absolutely moist on the in, boasting a beautifully crispy skin on the out, and flaking apart at the merest glance, we just couldn’t get enough, especially when had with the herbaceous crab sauce, the bitter-earthiness of the kale, and the soft potatoes.

Beetroot & Squash Gnocchi – Pea, Goats Cheese, £23.50

While this was the most left-key of the dishes had in this review, with the Beetroot and Squash Gnocchi combining the dollops of goats cheese, mashed peas, and walnuts to challenge our palates, its uniqueness also made it a memorably tasty one.

While it may not be to everyone’s taste, we would recommend those with an adventurous culinary streak to give this a go.

SIDES

Gost Halal Glasgow Steakhouse Scotland Fine Dining

Garlic Wild Mushrooms, £6.50

RECOMMENDED

A delightful little side this, with the garlic defining these superbly meaty wild mushroom mixture.

DESSERTS

Ferrero Rocher & Caramel Sundae – Gold leaf, condensed milk caramel, vanilla ice cream, £9.00

RECOMMENDED

This Ferrero Rocher & Caramel Sundae may look somewhat one-dimensional at first glance, but it was anything but.

This triumphant dessert had a burnt milky aftertaste, with the cream on top hiding a sticky chocolate interior, which we lapped up in a hurry.

Gost Halal Glasgow Steakhouse Scotland Fine Dining

Burnt Orange Chocolate Mousse, £8.50

RECOMMENDED

Contained within a relatively dark chocolate encasing was a velvety chocolate mousse that married wonderfully with the candy burnt orange candy draped over the top. Add to that the ice cream, and this was another beauty.

Gost Halal Glasgow Steakhouse Scotland Fine Dining

Sticky Toffee Pudding – Vanilla ice cream, toffee sauce, £8.00

Gost Halal Glasgow Steakhouse Scotland Fine DiningCan’t go wrong with a classic Sticky Toffee Pudding can you, especially after a hefty steak.

While there was no denying its depth of flavour, the sticky toffee sauce poured over the top compensated for it being a tad on the dry side.

We also concluded the evening at Gost with a rich cup of Cappuccino (£3.25).

This was paired with a complimentary piece of a Scottish sugary sweet called a tablet, which served to counter the rich bitterness of the coffee.

Summary
Yes we went into Gost with some high expectations, but what we didn't know is how strong their seafood game was in comparison to their exceptionally strong steak one. Yes both the steaks we tried were premium with a capital P, but those plates of seafood absolutely floored us down to the seabed.

This place maybe be pricey; but, given that this is in the heart of Glasgow city centre, and in light of the quality of their ingredients, the talent of the chefs, and the ambience of the restaurant itself, we can assure you that every penny will be well spent.

Needless to say, there's going to be a number of food and drink items here that'll most likely be shortlisted for our end of year awards in December. In the meantime, we'd strongly encourage Gost being somewhere close towards the top of your list of restaurants to visit when in Glasgow.
