MPs let their hair down in London last night to celebrate what was described as “the Westminster bubble’s heaviest night out”.

The 10th British Kebab Awards saw the House of Commons’ Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, use the platform to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, before speaking of his love of kebabs.

“I’ve got to tell you: I love a kebab. A kebab is something special. It’s the food I have on my way to a meeting or at the end of a night. I love a chicken kebab; I love a lamb kebab; I love a sheesh kebab. Let me tell you, I like all three together. That’s the kind of kebab person I am,” the Chorley MP reportedly said.

As for the event’s founder Ibrahim Dogus, then he made mention of the importance of immigration stating: “Let’s celebrate immigration, not denigrate it. Let’s protect refugees, not turn them away.”

Although a full list of winners is yet to be published, Halal kebab restaurant Uni Kebab in Southampton added to its trophies this year by winning the Best Value Restaurant award.

Having won the Good Food Award four years in succession since 2019 and achieving the ‘Gold Seal’ earlier this year, they are now preparing to open a larger second venue very soon.

And while Glasgow’s Shawarma King was voted Best Kebab House in Scotland, London’s Irmak Lounge won Best Newcomer Restaurant in London/ outside London.
