Hawley Wharf Camden offers plenty of Halal options

We got the chance of visiting the newly launched Hawley Wharf Camden in north London – a huge development in the heart of the area with plenty of restaurants spread across two floors.

The nearest entrance will be Water Lane Entrance (West) that’s adjacent to the iconic Camden Lock Railway Bridge on the junction of Chalk Farm Road, Camden High Street and Castlehaven Road.

Despite the shops offering fashion, homeware, accessories and more, it was the following six food brands that cater for Halal that we went to visit (N.B. – Pitta Bun, while offering Halal options, cannot guarantee no cross-contamination).

EKACHAI
HALAL STATUS Halal chicken (no cross-contamination) • Alcohol served

We last visited Southeast Asian restaurant Ekachai in 2018 to review their King’s Cross branch, and came away concluding that their dishes offered “strong, punchy flavours and others rotating around the delicate and subtle”.

Located on the second floor, this one has verified: “Halal-wise, we use Halal chicken as with all of our branches. In terms of separation, they are prepared separately and when any dish is cooked the woks are washed out between dishes.”

Some of the dishes to try (review coming soon) include Crispy Squid with Sichuan Peppercorn, Ayam Goreng, Nasi Lemak, Curry Laksa, Kai Krapow, and Pad Thai. Be sure to check these guys out!

HOTBOX
HALAL STATUS Beef & Chicken Halal (“no cross-contamination”) • Alcohol served

Now, does this Brisket Bun look good or does that look good?

HotBox is situated towards the far end of the second floor and specialises in barbecue smoked meats and burgers. We got to try their slow-smoked Brisket Bun doused in a deliciously smoky barbecue sauce, and we can tell you now: it was spectacular (review coming soon).

While they’ve informed FtLion that “the beef and chicken is Halal, with no alcohol used in any of the dishes” and with the assurance of no cross-contamination, HotBox can be  reached on 020 7247 1817 (or just “follow the smoke”).

RUDIE'S JERK SHACK

Rudie’s Jerk Shack is an established brand that serves its flavourous Jamaican cuisine across London including Brixton, Borough Market, Shoreditch Boxpark, Canary Wharf, Fulham, and Mercato Metropolitano.

Although alcohol is served here, this Shack, also on the second floor, offers a fully Halal food menu. Be sure to check out their Yardie Box with curry goat, a side, and a choice of four sauces.

Open Mon–Thur 11am till 6pm and Fri–Sun 11am till 8pm, delivery is available through their partners Deliveroo.

LEBANESE BY MEZZET
HALAL STATUS Fully Halal

Lebanese by Mezzet is the only fully Halal eatery in the complex. Of course, all the classic dishes are there starting with the Hot and Cold Starters, such as, Tabouleh, Fatoush, and Hommus from the former, to the Falafel, Halloumi, and Meat or Cheese Rakayat.

But it’s their Mezzet Specials, served with bread and sauces, you might consider with a selection of platters and a Moussaka Stew.

SPOON & RICE
HALAL STATUS Halal chicken options (see below; no cross-contamintion) • Alcohol & pork served
