Afrikana delivers for school reunion in London Hounslow

Keeping it anonymous for a school reunion outside Afrikana in Hounslow
For one of our rare high school reunions, we decided on meeting up at Afrikana near Hounslow’s Treaty Centre in west London.
This spacious restaurant offered plenty of opportunity for a weekend booking, and once we had all made our way down, the orders were put in.
If you don’t know about Afrikana, then they’re known for their fusion afro-inspired cuisine, with a number of new ones I hadn’t tried before.
Just Kebabin’ hanging lamb or chicken kebab with coleslaw & homemade mash
This Just Kebabin’ dish of lamb or chicken was actually recommended by our good waiter prompting two of us to give these hanging kebabs a go.
These turned out to be even better than anticipated, with the chicken being incredibly soft, plump and succulent; the lamb being firm enough to really enjoy; both delivering robust flavours; and accompanied by really creamy mash.
Bunny Chow is a South African street food special
This hollowed-out loaf is a South African street food special that really impressed when opened to reveal large chunks of mutton in a potato curry of aromatic spices.
And though we were expecting the same bold flavours of all the dishes had thus far, this Bunny Chow underwhelmed with mellow spices. May be that’s the way it’s meant to be; who knows.
All At Steak with tender spiced steak strips on brioche toast with melted cheese
All At Steak had strips of beef that boasted griddle marks and were glazed in a lovely spicy marination, before being placed upon a crunchy brioche toast with melted cheese, and topped with a combo of crispy fried and spring onions. Excellent!
Unlike all the above, this beautifully grilled Half Chicken was the only one that wasn’t from Afrikana’s Specials section.

Nevertheless, it showed off some bold flavours while being juicy, with the condiments of fresh coleslaw being a perfect foil to the spices, and the thick chips turning out crispy on the outside.
All in all, another memorable trip to Afrikana which, when it comes to flavours, rarely lets me down. Give it a go if you haven’t, especially if you’re meeting friends of yesteryear for a reunion.
