A luxuriously refurbished and refitted restaurant that harkens back to the cafes of Old India has been launched in Portsmouth.

Located on Elm Grove in Southsea, Desi Old India Cafe has opened for takeaways and deliveries despite having been scheduled to open for dine-in service on 1 February.

While the word ‘desi’ means pure, it can also refer to a person of Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladeshi birth or descent who happen to live abroad.

The business, which is linked to Unami Street Food a few doors along, is serving up fully Halal dishes from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Having taken over former Chick-o-land premises, manager Jahed Ahmed said that dine in would now be postponed for when Covid restrictions allow.

“The restaurant is like the Old Indian cafes, we have the old stairs, marble tables, leather seats, booths, hanging plants, it is hard to describe, you have to see it, it’s a wonderful place. I’d like to invite everyone to come along and visit, when they can, and see for themselves,” Jahed said.

Although Desi Old India Cafe were offering a 50% off voucher for opening day, this discount has now been postponed for when the restaurant fully opens.
