#FtLionAwards 2020 Dessert of the Year shortlist

After the #FtLionAwards 2020 Best Seafood of the Year (proudly sponsored by the UK’s original Karak Chai brand and award-winning restaurant Chaiiwala®), we continue with Best Dessert of the Year.

Of course, not only do you have the chance of voting for your favourite on our Instagram and Facebook pages, but you’ll also be entered into a prize draw, with three people chosen at random on 1st January 2021 to win x4 BREAKFAST VOUCHERS (sent via post) redeemable at any Chaiiwala® branch across the UK (T&C’s apply).

So we want you to either: 1) vote for the following nominees, or 2) let us know both your favourite dish and the place you had it, all on our Facebook and/or Instagram pages.

Balans, who have a drink and mains up for an award, served us not one, but two knockout desserts. Starting with these freshly made doughnuts, which were light and airy, dunked and rolled in plenty of sugar, and presented with an outstanding chocolate sauce and some vanilla flavoured cream. We couldn’t get enough of splitting open these warm balls of fluffiness and coating them equally in plenty of sauce and cream. They also presented a Warm Brioche Bread & Butter Pudding which, despite replacing the alcoholic custard for a scoop of vanilla ice cream, was more than good enough to qualify.

FLESH & BUNS

Flesh & Buns follow up their run of items in contention for an award with these Kinako Donuts. While traditional ones are spongy and soft in nature, this version was crispy and flaky on the outside, while being hollow on the in, and filled with just enough lightly sweetened Black Sugar Custard without being too sickly. Despite having been rolled in plenty of sugar, this wasn’t as sweet as one would think. As such, it turned out to be quite joyful mouthfuls.

THE LEBANESE BAKERY

The Lebanese Bakery qualifies for the first time with this Debess & Tahini. Sticky and crunchy, with that mixture of carob molasses and crushed caramelised almonds generously spread about, be sure to have this fresh out of the oven to really enjoy its full effect.

RAMO RAMEN

With a Starter, Main, and Seafood shortlisted, Ramo Ramen also have this freshly-prepared Mango & Peach Pie in with a chance. Coming with a small pitcher of creamy mango sauce, this had a thin and crispy pastry, which was lightly dusted in sugar and cinnamon, and contained enough gooey mango and peach fruit, which, when combined with the mango sauce, culminated in sumptuous mouthfuls of delight.
