The owner of a new restaurant in west London has insisted that his brand is different to two other restaurants in the borough with the same name.

Haweli celebrated the launch of its second restaurant in London with the opening of its branch in Southall’s The Broadway yesterday.

While two others sites have the same name and spelling displayed on their shop front, owner Nasir Younas has told FtLion that both his brand name and logo of ‘Haweli’ and ‘Haweli Restaurant’ are trademarked.

The other two restaurants are Haweli of Ealing, which FtLion reviewed back in 2020 rating it 3.5/5, and Asia Haweli, which is also located in Southall but on South Road.

Haweli of Ealing’s owner Manik Miah believed that this latest opening in the borough would “100% cause friction” having previously encountered problems when Haweli Restaurant launched its first site last year in London’s Ilford.

He revealed how some of his regular customers contacted him inquiring into whether his brand had opened a second restaurant in the east London area.

Is Ealing big enough for a trio of Haweli restaurants?

While Manik accepts that he “can’t stop people using the name” Haweli, he does predict that, given the proximity of the two restaurants in West Ealing and Southall, “it is going to be a problem”.

Nasir however disagrees pointing instead to the obvious differences between the three restaurants, which includes the actual brand names themselves.

He further highlights that while the other two are Indian restaurants – with one (Haweli of Ealing) serving alcohol – his does not just serve “authentic Pakistani” food, but unlike the other two, is also certified by the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC).

Although he acknowledged that there might be some initial confusion, Nasir is confident that “in a few months [that] confusion will go away” as his restaurant develops a clear brand identity.

Haweli Restaurant offers a diverse menu with dishes that include Chaats, Gol Gappe aka Pani Puri, Seekh and Shami Kebab, Tikka, as well as a variety Haweli Specialities such as Lahori Lamb Nihari, Shahi Lamb Haleem, and slow-cooked Phajjey Dey Paye.
