Being situated down the road from the famous Edinburgh Playhouse means that, in addition to their Lunch, Afternoon Tea, Party, and A La Carte menus, Kahani also offers a Pre-Theatre menu for £23.95 per person.

What makes this place so popular, however, is that, alongside its traditional Indian dishes and some robust Pakistani offerings, Kahani keeps things intriguing by incorporating some modern twists to its eclectic South Asian menu.

Kahani serve up multi-award winning menu

Kahani have an incredible menu which, after a Pickle Tray (£4.95) comprising of an assortment of pickles, chutnees and papadums to prime the taste buds, begins with their Signature Starters.

Of their 20 options, the one that’s recommended, and for good reason too, is their Triple Platter Starter for £15.95, which serves two, and comes with Aloo and Chana Chaat, Chicken Pakora, and Chilli Squid.

The strength of Kahani’s tandoor game can be gleaned from their Tandoori Lamb Chops (£8.95), which is cooked to a beautifully charred finish, and melt-in-the-mouth chargrilled Chutney Paneer Tikka (£7.95).

An example of their innovative side is exemplified by the Badal Jam (£7.25), which delightfully combines grilled aubergine slices with a topping of tomato masala, cream cheese, celery, and cumin flavoured yoghurt.

It’s only fitting after such resoundingly good tandoori starters that the Tandoori Grill section be explored, with plump and tender Tandoori King Prawns (£17.95) being an absolute must.

When it comes to their curries though, then this is where this Indian restaurant’s chefs really shine, particularly their Seafood Curries, with the South Indian favourite, the Seafood Moilee (£18.95), also a favourite with the locals.

With the essence of the ocean positively locked into this creamy coconut-based curry – courtesy of the squid, scallop, monkfish, mussel and prawns – be sure to pair this, and any other curry for that matter, with either rice or some tandoori naans.

From their more traditional dishes, the on-the-bone Punjabi Gosht is a must, with Kahani’s home-style cooking being defined by the exceptional interplay of the spices, and a curry that can be enhanced through the addition of either potato, mushroom or green peas.

Of course, it should go without saying that a dum-style Hyderabadi Biryani should be a no-brainer, which in this case can be enjoyed with either lamb, chicken, prawn, or vegetables.

What makes Kahani’s version stand out from the crowd is that it is served with not just raita, but also an aromatic sauce, that elevates this to another level of sophistication.

Kahani have given just as much attention to their beverages as they have their food, with a carefully curated selection of Speciality Mocktails.

Peach Cooler • Indian Sunrise • Blue Hawaiian

With eight to consider, the following provide a snippet of just how well conceived these are, such as the Blue Hawaiian (£5.75), which blends pineapple juice and coconut milk with blue curacao.

Otherwise, there’s the Indian Sunrise with strawberry lychee and lime shaken with mint and a hint of green chilli, or the Peach Cooler that has muddled lime wedges with mint shaken over peach puree and topped with apple juice (£5.45 each).

To finish things off, it has to be the freshly-made Mango Kheer; a lusciously creamy rice pudding that’s topped with diced mango bits and mango coolie.

What’s more, Kahani also have plenty of experience in seamlessly organising big day events too, with a catering service that can accommodate for parties, small wedding functions, corporate away-days, and more.
