Malay Fellas, who were reviewed and rated a perfect 5/5 before winning #FtLionAwards ‘Best Newcomer’ 2022, have made their big return to London’s Camden where it all began for them in 2021.

The award-winning Malaysian restaurant, who initially collaborated with Putera Puteri in west London’s Queensway, is back on Inverness Street having previously operated as a kitchen there in Tai Pan Alley.

Incredible range of beverages

This time things are very different, with childhood friends Harith and Shubli having made the big move in securing the entire building for themselves before renaming it Malay Fellas.

With 30 years’ combined cooking experience between them, the dynamic duo, who FtLion described as having “collectively set down a benchmark for Malaysian cuisine in the capital that will take some beating”, are now ready to write their next chapter.

Although they’re still collaborating with Putera Puteri to run a small cafe called Warung in Queensway, Malay Fellas in Camden can accommodate up to 60 guests indoors, with seating also available outdoors.

Pan-Asian dishes & epic drinks menu enhance perfect Malay menu

Since their return to Camden, Malay Fellas have taken things to the next level, with the services of a talented mixologist creating some incredible mocktails like the aromatically mature Passion Star with sublime nectar-like taste; the zingy Salted Caramel Apple, and the milky Coconut Tree, to name but three.

The team has also enhanced its award-winning menu with the introduction of pan-Asian cuisine, which include skewers of tender Beef Satay that’s served with a homemade peanut sauce, as well as pillowy-soft Bao Buns that come in a variety of fillings.

Bao Buns is just one example of new dishes added to the menu

Undoubtedly though, it’s their main courses where Malay Fellas really stand apart from all other Malaysian restaurants in London with an array of dishes created by Head Chef Shubli and Executive Chef Harith.

His ability to capture what is known as the ‘breath of the wok’, or wok hei as it’s known in Cantonese, and impart that smoky undertone to his dishes is second to none.

Unchanged:

Char Kuey Teow really captures that ‘breath of the wok’ – sublime!

And the street hawker-style Char Kuey Teow above is just one example, which, aside from succulent pieces of chicken juxtaposed with beautifully chewy flat rice noodles, really delivers on the smoky goodness of the wok.

Malay Fellas’ Nasi Lemak is just a cut above the rest, especially when had with their exquisitely balanced beef rendang, which comes with sticky coconut rice, spicy sambal, and all the classic condiments that make this a Malaysian staple.

But the dish that diners will find most surprising of all, given both its price at just £10.95 and its humongous size, is the fragrant Kari Laksa.

The depth of flavour here, courtesy of a meticulously crafted coconut curry broth, with egg noodles, beansprouts, a hard boiled egg, as well as shrimps to add that extra dimension, is astounding.

What is more, this can be enjoyed in four different ways, with the option of choosing your own protein: chicken, beef, prawns, or tofu & veggies.

A bowl as large as this flavorous Kari Laksa for just £10.95?!

To be sure, if you’re a fan of Malaysian cuisine, but haven’t visited Malay Fellas, then, simply put, you haven’t had the best representation of this cuisine in London.

And there’s no better chance than now with Harith and Shubli having teamed up with FtLion to offer their readers an exclusive 25% off the entire menu from Wednesday to Friday (valid until 8 Sept 2023; one voucher per customer).
