Sainsbury’s recalls its Medjool dates over Hepatitis A scare

Sainsbury’s has recalled its Taste the Difference Medjool dates for fear of being contaminated with Hepatitis A, the Food Standards Agency reported yesterday.

The supermarket giant is taking “precautionary action” by recalling all 200g and 500g pack sizes regardless of their best before dates.

“These products might be contaminated with Hepatitis A. Symptoms caused by Hepatitis A usually include fever, nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, dark-coloured urine and jaundice (a yellowing of the skin),” the Food Standards Agency warned.

Sainsbury’s said on its product recall page: “We are asking customers who have purchased these products with this specific supplier code [see above] not to eat them and to return them to their nearest Sainsbury’s store for a full refund when they next visit for groceries & other essentials. Please note that packs without this code present are not affected.”

Sainsbury’s will be putting up ‘point of sale’ notices across all retail stores selling these products explaining to customers why the products are being recalled and what to do if they have bought them.
