Norwich Halal visits Japanese gaming cafe Pixel Pantry

A new independent café has recently launched in Norwich. The location of Monchai has been replaced with Pixel Pantry – a café with a Japanese food twist.

This Halal eatery is an independent with a gaming theme. The logo reminded me of the famous TV-series Squid Game.

The menu is small and concise; but somehow expresses variety. It mainly consists of giant toasted sandwiches called “Sandos”, loaded fries, soft drinks and desserts.

I had a Patty Melt Sando (smashed minced beef, cheese, gherkins, tomatoes, lettuce and burger sauce), which basically tasted like a smash burger, but in a toasted bread sandwich. It was nice, but it didn’t really stand out for me.

As for the K Town Chicken Sando (seasoned breaded chicken breast, glazed with gochujang sauce, pickled carrots and cucumbers, and squeeze of kewpie mayo), then this was superb, and the best of the two meat sandos. Had very good flavour.

The Tamago To Go Sando (boiled eggs with squeeze of kewpie mayo, seasoned to taste) was quite standard to be honest. I would rather go for one of the two meat options.

While the well cooked Standard fries were very nice and crunchy, the Patty Melt Loaded fries – basically cheeseburger loaded fries – was good; but I think the chicken version would be better.

As for the Iced Pistachio Chai; this tasted like rasmalai latte, and was extremely nice and refreshing.

One thing that stood out for me was the quality of the bread and how it was toasted. They were thick slices that complimented well. The desserts also looked good.

So I look forward to trying the Chicken Sando again and the Iced Pistachio Chai (rated 8/10).
