Award-winning Kanafeh Kingz: ‘A taste of Palestine’ in Dublin

The word ‘kanafeh’… dates back at least to the 10th century with reports placing its origin in the [Palestinian] West Bank, city of Nablus – Kanafeh Kingz

One of the highlights of this unique Halal food tour of Dublin was a visit to Kanafeh Kingz and their award-winning Palestinian kanafeh desserts.

This brand has been the talk of the town this year after launching their second site and being voted Ireland’s Dessert Outlet of the Year at The Food Awards.

Having started off as a delivery business in 2020, Kanafeh Kingz eventually opened a food truck a year later at the Hibernian Industrial Estate’s Serla House in Tallaght’s Greenhills Road.

This was followed earlier this year with the opening of a charming little cafeteria at the Coolmine Industrial Estate in Blanchardstown’s Porters Road.

With seating available for eight, the place itself is a small yet intimate one that’s defined by a striking wall mural depicting Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem.

For those not in the know, then a kanafeh is “a traditional Palestinian dessert that consists of a kanafeh dough, above a layer of melted cheese, and drizzled with sugar syrup. Topped off with raw crushed pistachios”.

And as for the relationship between a kanafeh and Palestine, then according to Kingz: “While reports differ on its origins, Nablus has become the cradle for the Middle Eastern staple dessert. It has also become a staple of Arab cuisine and emblematic of Palestinian culture and pride.”

Kanafeh Kingz specialise in a trio of platters that include the Classic and the Nablusi for €8.00 and the more recent Pistachio for €8.50.

With distinct flavours and textures, each one is unique in its own right, with the Classic being the sweetest of the three, the Pistachio more drier and packed with that nutty goodness, and the Nablusi delivering a more mature flavour profile.

What makes these especially exciting is the range of combinations that can be enjoyed with their variety of teas, coffees and Speciality Blends.

From the more familiar Spanish Latte for €5 and the Iced Coffee for €4.50, to the richness of the Turkish Coffee for €3.50, there’s plenty to explore and consider.

The brand has also recently introduced two lip-smackingly delicious mojitos – a Strawberry and a Passionfruit – in addition to a syrup-soaked semolina cake called a Basbusa.

This dessert is especially popular across the Middle East, and involves a semolina batter being baked in a sheet pan, and saturated with a light sugar syrup, before being segmented into squares of varying quantities: 1 piece €4.50 • 500g €12 • 1kg €24.

With onsite parking available, Kanafeh Kingz is a must visit when in Dublin, with plenty more to explore at the Coolmine Industrial Estate.
