KARISIK IZGARA - Mixed kebab, consisting of adana, shish, chicken & lamb chops served with rice & salad

Aziziye (Turkish) – Stoke Newington

100% Halal and uniquely situated in the basement of a mosque,  this well known restaurant serves kebabs, Turkish pizza, and an assortment of traditional starters.

Though the Turkish themed interior decor requires a lick of paint, it’s nevertheless very inviting.

But what makes this place stand out is that not only is it very reasonably priced compared to similar rival restaurants in upmarket places like Edgware Road, but it offers a number of family booths that are absolutely ideal for those who seek that extra bit of privacy.

Since you’re given the standard complementary bread, it makes sense to order something on the side, such as, hummus.

YOGURTLU KIZARTMA – Fried aubergine, courgette, potato, green pepper served with garlic & yoghurt

Now, this (don’t ask us to pronounce it with out mouths full) was fantastic, with the garlic yoghurt complimenting the dish really well.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

COBAN KAVURMA – Diced lamb, tomatoes onions & peppers cooked with herbs served with rice

Lamb was good, but lacked flavour in our opinion (that’s Arab food for you folks!).

The Turkish pizza (apologies for the blurry pic) was pretty good actually.

It won’t blow your mind; but given the price and the crispy thin base, well worth trying (wouldn’t exactly call it a pizza though; more a flat bread with mince on top).

Unfortunately, the mixed grill was dry and tasteless (similar to Kervan Sofrasi or Abu Zaad)! The lamb chops were very rubbery and difficult to tear off.

Summary
Now although the unique selling point of this place are the booths, a cautionary word of warning to our sisters who observe the hijab would be that you not risk removing it since the waiters do come in unannounced. Hence, might be a good idea for those who are strict in this regard to forewarn the staff.

Also, things can get quite loud and rowdy in a hurry when you're cosily tucked away in your booths. So don't expect this place to be a quiet night out especially when it's busy. Oh, and given their popularity, we'd also recommend prebooking the booths.

As for the food, then it's average at best and relatively cheap, but nothing to write home about. Like we said, this place has character and character apparently goes a long way!
