Karim Bourgi to open Kayu bakehouse in London Mayfair

A former Le Cordon Bleu Paris alumni has announced the launch of his first UK-based Middle Eastern bakehouse Kayu next month in October.

Lebanese chef Karim Bourgi, who graduated as a Pastry Chef at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, has said that “we are bringing our creations, savoir faire and excitement to the heart of Mayfair, London”.

Having confirmed with FtLion that Kayu will be “100% Halal”, the bakehouse will be opening on the iconic stretch of Shepherd Market, which dates back to the mid-18th century.

The Senegalese-born chef will be making his European debut three years after establishing the brand in the Middle East, which now boasts three sites in Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh; as well as one each Abu Dhabi’s Galleria Mall and Dubai,

After graduating from Le Cordon Bleu Paris in 200, Bourgi managed the openings of Las Maison Du Chocolat Paris in Dubai and Kuwait.

Having been founded in Paris in 1895, Le Cordon Bleu is, according to its website, “considered today the largest network of culinary and hospitality schools in the world with more than 35 institutes in 20 countries and 20,000 students of over 100 nationalities are trained every year”.

Specialising in French desserts, Kayu’s menu includes sweet treats such as raspberry cream cheese croissants, double chocolate brioche and mosaic roll cake, alongside a selection of macarons, tarts, travel cakes and tea.
