Calls to boycott Tesco after airing TV ad promoting Halal meat

Tesco Halal meat Twitter Storm

Supermarket giant Tesco helped the #Halal tag on Twitter trend to over 30K yesterday evening after airing a TV advert promoting Halal meat.

Tweets began to post almost immediately by outraged members calling for Tesco to be boycotted in favour of anyone else including Asda and Morrisons.

With Toby Shaw attempting to sarcastically work out what country he was residing in, a Baron Dunx von Greener simply called for boycotting Tesco.

Shysteee2018 reminded those threatening to leave for Asda or Morrisons that the two food brands had been busy promoting Halal for years.

Morrisons was even involved in the launch of a Ramadan essentials food box for fasting families struggling during lockdown this year.

Tesco, Morrisons and Asda have been well known for competing in “price wars” over essential goods weeks before the start of the fasting month of Ramadan.

While Amrita argued that “people DO have a personal choice to buy Halal meat”, she also believed that the reason behind anyone calling for a boycott was ultimately “rooted in their Islamophobia. There’s literally no other reason”.

Unsurprisingly there was a lot of banter too with @LibaaxOfSomalia’s humurous response clarifying: “Paul, you will not become Muslim by eating something Halal. It does not work like that.”
